The Purpose: to show off your skills as a new member of the learning and development team, who is ready to hit the ground running

Use Case

These questions can be used when you meet a new department or stakeholders during your onboarding. They are less specific than the “what is the purpose of this meeting” questions, and can be used before you are assigned specific projects or initiatives.

Instructions

When preparing for a meeting with a new department or stakeholder groups, when your role in supporting them has not yet been defined, here are five questions to ask:

  1. How have our departments partnered together in the past?

  2. What are the biggest challenges in your department?

  3. If you could wave a magic wand and fix one issue on your team, what would it be?

  4. What are your departments current metrics for success? How do you measure those?

  5. Are there any key members of your department I should meet who are not currently present at this meeting?

Pros

Having these questions at the front of your mind when you meet a new department will help you feel prepared for the next chapter of your career!

Don’t be surprised if departmental stakeholders do not have a great answer to the question about metrics - they may have never thought about these before. But that means there is opportunity for you to help them create measurements for success!
